24. Q Please tell me about the road conditions?
A. Wanaka like most places in New Zealand it rarely snows
in the town, if it does usually only once or twice a year.
The roads are not salted, but often they drop stones on
the steep and windy mountain roads to act like chains and
give you more grip on the road.
There may not be much snow on the roads compared to other
countries but they still can be icy and dangerous if your
not careful. Most ski field roads are not sealed looking
very old fashioned but giving more grip and safety on the
road. On occasions some roads may be closed due to heavy
snow, these are between Wanaka and Queenstown (Crown Range)
and the road in Ashburton. (Hywy1), which is the road that
must be taken to get to and from Wanaka. Please take care
on all roads especially early morning! Black ice is hard
to see on a black road.
